German Chancellor Angela Merkel stood firm this Wednesday blasting President Trump’s for his suggestion that Germany is controlled by Russia, reaffirming that her nation is “united in freedom” and makes independent policies and decisions.
“I have experienced myself how a part of Germany was controlled by the Soviet Union,” Merkel said while making a reference to her childhood in communist East Germany, according to Reuters. “I’m very glad that today we are united in freedom … because of that we can say that we can make our independent policies and make independent decisions.”
Her fierce remarks came in response to an earlier attack at the beginning of the NATO summit where Trump had claimed that Germany was “totally controlled” by and “captive to” Russia.
Trump made the bold statement during a breakfast with NATO Secretary-General Jens. His remarks seemed to surround a deal Germany recently struck with Russia that aims to bring gas from Russia to Germany’s northeastern Baltic coast.
“I have to say, I think it’s very sad when Germany makes a massive oil and gas deal with Russia, where you’re supposed to be guarding against Russia, and Germany goes out and pays billions and billions of dollars a year to Russia,” Trump said during the meeting.
Trump had previously attempted to dissuade Merkel from supporting the pipeline back in April.
Merkel also came to the defense of Germany’s contribution to the NATO alliance, which Trump has repeatedly suggested puts too much strain on U.S. taxpayers.
Trump’s remarks about Germany and NATO-led to increased tensions ahead of the NATO summit on Wednesday. A NATO official explained that expectations were very low because of the president’s blatant aggression towards Germany, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Here’s how Americans reacted:
If anybody can take Trump on and win in a discussion/argument it is Angela Merkel I believe.
