Late night host Stephen Colbert came forth on Wednesday to poke fun at Jeff Sessions after he was forced out as Attorney General.
“This morning Trump fired his Attorney General Jeff Sessions, seen here on his happiest day in the job,” Colbert quipped on his late-night show, before sharing a picture of Sessions looking devastated.
“‘My God,'” Colbert joked, before doing his best Sessions impression. “‘My God what have I become?'”
After months of fielding scrutiny from the president, Sessions “stepped down” on Wednesday.
“I came to work at the Department of Justice every day determined to do my duty and serve my country,” Sessions stated in his resignation letter.
“I have done so to the best of my ability, working to support the fundamental legal processes that are the foundation of justice.”
“You can’t blame Sessions for recusing himself,” Colbert declared Wednesday. “It’s the only thing that’s good that he’s ever done!”
Colbert also fired shots at Sessions’ temporary replacement, Matthew Whitaker.
“Who on earth would be willing to go down in history as the man who stepped in to fire Robert Mueller,” Colbert explained. “Enter new acting Attorney General, and caucasian Eminem, Matt Whitaker.”
“Now there is no way to know Whitaker’s stance on the Mueller investigation,” Colbert said. “Unless you read his op-ed, ‘Mueller’s investigation of Trump has gone too far,’ in which Whitaker wrote that if Mueller looks into Trump’s finances it ‘could be damaging to the President of the United States … and by extensions, to the country.’ ”
