Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey recently informed Sean Hannity that the social media platform has never “shadowbanned” Republican media personalities.
“We do not shadowban according to political ideology or viewpoint or content, period,” Dorsey stated firmly during a rare interview on Hannity’s radio show.
The company has faced scrutiny from the GOP in recent weeks after several high-profile Republicans pushed back that their reach on the platform had been significantly reduced. Twitter has repeatedly stated that this was merely the result of recent alterations made to their algorithm which was meant to down-rank users who engage in specific behaviors and that Democrats were severely affected as well.
On Wednesday, Dorsey admitted that Twitter needs to do a better job of outlining the decisions it makes and the reasoning behind those actions.
“We’re trying to approach this with a very simple principle: How do we earn more trust?” Dorsey said. “We haven’t done a great job of communicating our principles.”
The company has also faced criticism for being one of the only media platforms not to ban right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. Pages for Jones and his radio show InfoWars have been removed from sites including Spotify, Apple and Facebook.
However, Jones remains on Twitter despite his controversial claim that the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting was a hoax and that the 9/11 terror attacks were carried out by the government. Dorsey state on Twitter this week that Jones “hasn’t violated our rules.”
On Wednesday, he explained that his company is trying to balance free speech with the need to protect its users from hate speech.
“There’s a lot of nuance in everything that we’re facing,” he said. “We’re getting better and better, step by step.”
