It’s unclear what President Donald Trump expected when he arrived in Manila, Philippines, but we’re certain it fell short and fell far.
When Trump arrived, protesters stormed the streets leading to the U.S Embassy. Riot police had to block the roads to prevent the masses from reaching Trump. Protesters shouted, “Dump Trump”, “Trump not welcome”, and “Ban Trump”.
The crowd grew loud as they threw black paint on a poster with Trump’s face, the word “fascist” written beneath it.
One protester was not afraid to express their frustrations at Trump’s visit. “Trump is no friend of the Filipino people. He brings war. He brings economic impositions, ” they said. “He wants to bring the U.S. war on terror in the Philippines. He wants to drag us in the politics in North Korea. He wants to bring back U.S. bases in the Philippines. He does things that are not beneficial to the Filipino people.”
Members of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan, a left-wing group in the Philippines, told the Southeast Asia Globe, “Trump represents the worst aspects of US imperialism. He is right now the biggest threat to regional peace with his provocations against North Korea.”
With protests across Asia letting Trump know he’s unwelcome, it’s possible they’ll get rid of him soon enough. For American, however, we’re stuck with him until 2020.
