A few days ago, news broke that FBI agents used a no-knock warrant in a pre-dawn raid on Paul Manafort’s home to seize possible evidence in the Russia investigation. Now Trump’s former campaign manager has tapped a new legal team to represent him.
Law firm WilmerHale had been speaking on Manafort’s behalf to investigators, but that relationship has ended:
As of today, WilmerHale no longer represents Mr. Manafort. Mr. Manafort is in the process of retaining his former counsel, Miller & Chevalier, to represent him in the office of special counsel investigation.
Miller & Chevalier is a boutique firm in Washington that specializes in complicated financial crimes among other issues, according to Politico. Kevin Downing, a former senior Department of Justice official known for his work representing clients and firms facing complex financial investigations, will be working on the case.
Manafort’s move indicates that he realizes the case has heated up and that he needs specialized criminal counsel. A number of Manafort’s financial institutions were subpoenaed, and special counsel Robert Mueller has been examining Manafort’s personal finances and consulting work as part of his probe into the Trump campaign’s collusion with Russia during Trump’s 2016 presidential run.
