Although it’s quite clear that Prince Harry and former President Barack Obama’s friendship was tight right from the beginning, this may not be enough for Obama to get an invite the quickly approaching Royal Wedding in May. If it were up to Harry and fiancée Meghan Markle, I’m sure he would absolutely make the guestlist, however with all of the political pressure they are dealing with, it may just be easier to leave him out.
The British journalist and biographer behind Prince Harry: The Inside Story, Duncan Larcombe has assessed the situation from all angles, and what it boils down to is that if Harry and Meghan invite who they want to invite and Trump doesn’t make the cut, there will be serious hell to pay. Larcombe said, “Harry and Meghan will be guided by the Foreign Office’s advice.”
Traditionally, the Foreign Office has suggested it would be wise not to invite any head of state to a royal wedding, which Prince William and Kate Middleton also followed these directions for their 2011 wedding. Larcombe thinks that Harry will also comply with these suggestions to avoid any conflict.
Larcombe said, “There were religious leaders, members of the royal family, and commonwealth countries that were invited. I suspect that will be the same blueprint that [Meghan and Harry] will use. It’s all very carefully orchestrated to make sure that there’s no political overtones.”
It’s unfortunate that something that should be exciting for Harry and Meghan, has to be stressful because of none other than Donald Trump. He is a head of state, which means he will most likely not receive an invite, and that should be a good excuse for the couple at the very least. However, even if this wasn’t a suggestion, it is unlikely that he would be invited anyway, especially after he retweeted highly disturbing videos from a white nationalist from the UK.
Obviously, Trump being the child that he is, he won’t understand why he won’t be invited. And if Obama gets an invite and he doesn’t, we better start preparing for the temper tantrum of the century. Who knows what he’ll do.
If Obama doesn’t make the cut, Larcombe knows that Harry will do the right thing and call him personally to explain the situation, and unlike Trump, he’ll understand because he is mature adult.
